When I first began this composition I didn’t know which community to write about. I was torn because I wanted to write about my band, but I’m not really a part of it anymore, now that I’m up at FSU and no longer in high school. I ended up trying it out though, and I have decided that I am writing about my high school marching band. I wrote my introduction and conclusion at the same time, and they were very personal and close to my heart. They were both about how much I loved band and how it was such a great opportunity to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with my fellow band members. Then I filled in all the information about different genres and sub-genres used during different aspects and parts of band. Then once I completed my first draft I met with Mr. Wenzel and he told me my paper was too informative and that I needed to make it more personal and write more about what band was to me and what it meant to me. I then went back to it and wrote more about my individual experience in band and my duties as Section Leader. I also added more information about the genres that I briefly touched upon in my first draft, like the Drum Majors’ commands and cues for the band. I also talked about how being Section Leader my last two years of high school directly linked me to many of these genres and often times I would be the one to use them and communicate with other band members.
